... but I've just realized that I equate the Hexagram 57, THE GENTLE, with vanilla.
Vanilla's scent ... taste ... colour (in the butter-kissed, off-white sense) are all subtle, yet pervasive.
Isn't it funny what we associate with the hexagrams ...
This thought struck me during my first sip of a fresh cup of tea. I've run out of my favorite (chai), so I steeped a cup of vanilla-flavoured black tea. Yughh! I scanned its list of ingredients; sure enough, one was "artificial flavour."
We can't fake gentleless; nor can we adequately evoke vanilla's essence from chemicals we've created. Vanilla's essence is unmistakeable; so is the touch of THE GENTLE. It gets through eventually, inevitably. It's as Real as real can get.
